Christmas With Mary Alice Jones

Dr. Mary Alice Jones (June 23, 1898 - September 23, 1980) was a lecturer, teacher, and the author of dozens of books for children about the Bible, Jesus Christ, prayer, God...and Christmas which sold over 20 million copies and were translated into multiple languages. She held masters' and doctoral degrees from Northwestern University and Yale University and was a widely respected consultant for Christian children's education.

Published by Rand McNally & Co., 1953

Some of Dr. Jones' credentials that were usually published on the back covers of her books.

She is best remembered today for her "Tell Me About..." series which began in 1943 while she was the children's religious editor for Rand McNally beginning in 1945. Many online sources do not have a complete biography of Miss Jones and creating one has been a goal of mine for some time. This year would have been her 120th birthday, and the 75th anniversary of her first children's book Tell Me About God, so now may be a special time to reintroduce her work online.

To research the life of Mary Alice Jones, I have built a small but growing collection of her works.
Some of Jones' books were made into audio-visual aids for school, home and church use. I was fortunate to have purchased a super-rare A/V filmstrip & LP record version of her book "Tell Me About Christmas".

Very rare cover box for the filmstrip and 33 R.P.M record for Mary Alice Jones' "Tell Me About Christmas".

I am interested in learning more about Jones' work in radio and instructional technology, (a woman as educated as her has to have an archival collection out there) and there will be more writings about her to come.

Welcome to the Christmas Library 2018!

"Jack and Judy in Bibleland", December 24, 1948. Nationally published comic strip by Robert Acomb

About five years ago I read an interesting news article from 1994 about an all too obvious truth about broadcast media during the Christmas season. That scarcely any of the many Christmas specials on television acknowledge the birth of Christ as central to the meaning of Christmas. So with that in mind, I began researching radio and TV specials that focus on the Birth of Christ, compiling a list of media from television, radio, home video and even exciting programs from the Golden Age of Radio.

To find wonderful radio and TV special the acknowledge Jesus and the reason for the season, please visit the updated Christmas Library Guide, for the best in radio, television and film. This page will be updated daily.

Every December I have tried to post fun research finds related under the banner of the "Christmas Library" and hope to be more fruitful in December 2018. There will be posts on comic strips, music, instructional technology, radio and television ministries, and so much more to show many ways to tell the tidings of great joy of the birth Jesus Christ.

In the meantime, to find wonderful stories that give the reason for the season, please check out the revised Christmas Library Guide, and recheck it often for updates.

Operation Christmas Child: Collection Week 2018

It is hard to believe that it is once again collection week for Operation Christmas Child.

"Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan’s Purse, works with local Christians in more than 100 countries to deliver gift-filled shoeboxes to children in need. The Greatest Journey is our 12-lesson follow-up discipleship course for children who have received shoebox gifts".

My wife and I packed our first shoebox two years ago and have looked forward to doing it again ever since. Were able to send 13 overseas last year and have far surpassed that this year. It gives us a lot of joy knowing that these packages can bring joy and hope to a small child and lead them to Christ.

National Collection Week is HERE and I want to encourage you to find a local packing center so you can touch the life of a child!

Classic Jack Hamm Cartoon: "Hope the Communist Can't Offer"

By Jack Hamm - "Hope the Communist Can't Offer", from the Sunday Journal and Star (Lincoln, Nebraska).                 Sunday, July 19, 1953.

This comic panel was published close to the end of the Korean War, but it should still offer encouragement to missionaries serving abroad. The scripture used is from Romans 5: 3- 5.

"3 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; 4 And patience, experience; and experience, hope: 5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us." (King James Version).

Classic Jack Hamm Cartoon: "Empty Shelves and Empty Pews"

"Empty Shelves and Empty Pews" by Jack Hamm. This cartoon appeared in the Sunday Journal and Star (Lincoln, Nebraska), Sunday, July 12, 1953

This 1953 comic panel by Jack Hamm illustrates the great truth of John 6:35, that Jesus is the Bread of Life, but many will seek to fill their hunger elsewhere. Hamm was a master of drawing techniques to create the illusion of mass crowds of people. This panel is a great example of that skill that he also shared in his popular drawing books.

Classic Television: "Scripture Sketches"

Scripture Sketches
TV drawing series with cartoonist Lois J. Fisher
Broadcast: June 20, 1954 - October 23, 1955 (as "Scripture Sketches"); October 30, 1955 to January 9, 1956 (as "Krayon Kronicles"). KRON-TV Channel 4, San Francisco, California, USA
Sundays at various times, originally at 1:30pm, later at 11:45am.

Lois J. Fisher drawing a Bible scene for "Scripture Sketches". From the Oakland Tribune Sunday, September 4, 1955.

For several years I have researched pioneering cartoonist, and television hostess/producer Lois Jeanette Fisher (c. 1904 - 1988). Miss Fisher combined her talents for the camera and cartooning in at least 4 television programs all broadcast before 1955. She did experimental broadcasts in Chicago in 1946 where children were asked to trace drawings on their television screens, making her one of the first people make television interactive. This was followed in 1949 by a live children's drawing program for WPIX in New York called "Trace-A-Pix" and another Chicago children's series "Lois and Looie" from 1950 - 1951. She was well known as the author and illustrator of the 1947 children's book "You and the United Nations".

At some point Ms. Fisher moved to the San Francisco area to appear on "Scripture Sketches" for KRON-TV, Channel 4. In the first episode she retold the story of "Noah and the Ark". The program was praised in a September 4, 1955 article from an issue of the Oakland Tribune newspaper.

Bible Picture Stories (cover) by Lois J. Fisher. (1955) published by Children's Press, Chicago.
According to this article, Miss Fisher's interest in Bible drawings began while she was a little girl as she drew Bible stories during the sermons and hymns.

In response to "Scripture Sketches" parents and children began requesting drawings from Miss Fisher for home study. She did mail artwork to audiences while supplies lasted. This led to the development of a book "Bible Picture Stories" published by the Children's Press of Chicago. While the program was only seen the California - Nevada viewing area, Lois J. Fisher was able to reach and teach a larger audience with her book. This book also serves as a great record of her drawing style and the content of her Bible program. The Oakland Tribune article suggests that this book was to be the first in the series, but only one was published.

Beginning in the fall of 1955 the series continued as "Krayon Kronicles" but it is not known how and if the series content changed.

If anyone reading this article owns one of Lois J. Fisher's Bible drawings that was given away during the program's run, or has fond memories of this series, I would love the hear from you.

Updates to the Radio Programs Page

The Radio programs page has just reached 700 views! This is the most popular part of the FBSM blog and I hope that is has been a blessing to all that use it. Radio is a very special medium to me for learning and spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ. While I have updated this page almost every month, I have not shared these updates in a blog post for a long time.

The following series have been added to the Radio Programs page since the beginning of the year:

Dramatic Programs Still Broadcast Over The Air in the United States.

Down Gilead Lane (???? - present)
A popular audio drama from CBH/Keys for Kids Ministries. Available for streaming online.
I am researching more information to add to this programs summaries.

A Visit With Mrs. G. [Bible Stories Alive]. Children's (c. early 1970s - present)
The international radio ministry of Mrs. Kitty Anna Griffiths "Mrs. G", beloved teacher, author, and Bible storyteller. Heard on hundreds of stations worldwide.
http://www.biblestoriesalive.org/

A Visit With Mrs. G. - Station Listings

Radio Dramas From The Golden Age of Radio (c. 1922 - c. 1962)

Uncle Bob's Bible Stories (a.k.a. Stories From The Bible) - children's (c. 1939 - ????, KARK Little Rock, Ark.)
A Sunday morning program with Corporal Robert L. Buice as master of ceremonies. Buice was a legend in Arkansas broadcasting and his Bible series may have been the longest running radio program in that state.

Upper Room. drama. (1947 - ????)
For a few years the Upper Room Ministries would produce radio dramas for "National Family Week" dealing with current topics of family life and strife. The 1947 series "So You Want To Stay Married" can still be heard in its entirety and is downloadable from several old time radio sites.

Down Our Way. drama. (syn. c. 1949 - ????)
Very little is known about this 26 episode half-hour series despite the number of episodes that exist. A very heartwarming series that centers around members of a church choir and the goings on around their community. Produced by Commodore Productions, more well known for producing the "Hopalong Cassidy" radio series.

Radio Classics from 1963 to the Present

This is a new section for programs that debuted after 1962, but are not know to currently be broadcast on any radio station or streaming service.

Fables of Faith. (c. 1970 - ????) children's
A children's radio series of at least 109 stories, exact content unknown, produced by Vann Owen Trapp. This series was known to have aired in the mid 1980s on Moody Bible stations.

Critter County on Radio (c. 1985 - ????) children's
The radio ministry of Christine Wyrtzen, creator of the Critter County children's album that was released in 1984. On her weekly radio program, Christine presented music and Bible learning in a fun way along with Sidney, the talking squirrel.

There are some programs I would like more information about before adding to the page, so continue to check out this blog for more updates.

Remembering Billy Graham & World Wide Pictures

It was about two years ago when my wife and I went to see an exhibit on the life of Billy Graham at the North Carolina Museum of History in Raleigh, NC. The exhibit called "North Carolina's Favorite Son: Billy Graham's Remarkable Journey of Faith" touched on many aspects of the ministry of Rev. Graham.

Obviously the parts of the exhibit that I found to be the most fascinating were his work on the Songs in the Night radio program, and a 35mm print of the World Wide Pictures production "Joni" based on the life of Joni Eareckson Tada.

Before seeing this exhibit I was unaware that the Billy Graham Evangelical Association was involved producing motion pictures, short films and documentaries since 1951. World Wide Pictures has reportedly produced over 100 films but the official website only shows 33 examples. This means that many more of these film must be in a library or archive somewhere
